International Women’s DayÌýtakes place on March 8thÌýeach year.ÌýLed globally by UN Women,Ìýit is not only a celebration ofÌýwomen’s achievementsÌýbut a reminder that a lot still needs to be done for gender equality.Ìý

Recent reporting from UN Women shows that, at the current rate of progress, full gender equality globallyÌýremainsÌýgenerations away. Earlier analysis suggested it could take close to 300 years to achieve full parity.ÌýÌý

Although progress in education and healthÌýhas made great strides,Ìýheadway inÌýleadership gaps, pay inequality and disproportionate caring responsibilitiesÌýremainÌýstagnant.Ìý

At ¿Ú½»ÑÕÉä,ÌýWales’Ìýlargest training provider,ÌýIWDÌýremainsÌýclose to our heart. Eight out of ten of our colleagues are women. Four out of five of ourÌýdirectors are women. Our mantra,Ìýimproving lives through learning,Ìýis rooted inÌýthe belief thatÌýopportunities,ÌýinclusionÌýand empowermentÌýis for all.Ìý

Gender equality is not a women’s issue,Ìýit’sÌýa leadership issue,ÌýaÌýworkplaceÌýissueÌýand aÌýsocietal issue.ÌýAnd that’sÌýwhere male allyship comes in.Ìý

Systemic change rarely happens without those in positions of power choosing to act.ÌýGlobally, men still occupyÌýmostÌýsenior leadership roles.ÌýEach year,ÌýÌýhighlights a steep drop-off in women’s representation at senior and executive levels, even in sectors where women make up most of the workforce.ÌýWithÌýpolicies, culture and progression pathwaysÌýmostlyÌýshapedÌýfrom the top down, this lack of equality creates a problem.Ìý

Male allyship is not about stepping into the spotlight. It is about usingÌýyourÌýinfluence to question bias, sponsor female talent, challenge unequalÌýpracticesÌýand advocate for structural change.Ìý

For businesses, gender equalityÌýcan help improve operations.ÌýÌýshows that diverse leadership teams correlate with improved financial performance, strongerÌýinnovationÌýand better decision-making. Diverse boards and senior management teams are linked to higher returns on equity and stronger long-term growth.Ìý

The UKÌýGovernment’sÌýÌýhas also emphasised that closing gender gaps in participation and pay would significantly boost national productivity and economic resilience.Ìý

BeyondÌýoperational health, anÌýoften-overlookedÌýbenefit of gender equality is improved outcomes for men and their wellbeing.ÌýÌý

Workplace cultures that value emotional intelligence, flexibility and inclusive leadership create space for men to step outside restrictive stereotypes.ÌýFor example, policies such as enhanced parental leave and flexible working benefit fathers as much as mothers.Ìý

In the UK, suicideÌýremainsÌýthe leading cause of death for men under 50. Cultural expectations around masculinity,Ìýsuch asÌýstrength without vulnerabilityÌýandÌýresilience without support,Ìýcan have devastating consequences.Ìý

Championing positive, emotionally intelligentÌýworkplacesÌýhelp dismantle these harmful normsÌýandÌýexpandÌýwhat leadership and strength can look like.Ìý

At ¿Ú½»ÑÕÉä, we are proud that women make upÌýmuch ofÌýour workforce and leadership team. But representation alone is not the end goal,Ìýwe’reÌýproud to be nurturing a culture of support and inclusivity with the help of our male staff members.Ìý

We spoke toÌýDavidÌýCarroll,Ìý¿Ú½»ÑÕÉä’sÌýALN Inclusion ManagerÌýand acting head of ourÌýSchoolsÌýprovision. Outside of his work within the organisation, he is aÌýcoach for Cardiff City Women’s Football Team.ÌýWe discussedÌýwhatÌýmale allyship looks like in practice.Ìý

“I think it’s vitally important to ensure that in both the workplace and coaching environment, everyone feels that their contribution is valued and that theyÌýareÌýable to express their thoughts and feelings,â€ David said. “I think itÌýis important to create aÌýsafeÌýenvironment.ÌýBeing an ally isÌýaboutÌýallowing all staff,ÌýlearnersÌýand players to feel heard without judgement regardless of their gender.â€Ìý

Talking aboutÌýhisÌýunderstanding of leadership through his coaching ventures, David added: “Good leadershipÌýhas toÌýbe underpinned through listening and recognising everyone’s strengths. When a coach promotes an inclusive environment, this will in turn lead to an improved performance.ÌýÌý

“Through my experience of coaching the women’s football team, I understandÌýthe importance ofÌýaÌýteamÌýthatÌýfeelsÌývalued,ÌýsupportedÌýand able to express their thoughts and wishes.Ìý

“It’sÌýalso given meÌýa deeper understandingÌýregardingÌýthe challenges that women face inÌýsportÌýand I am passionate that everyone deserves equal opportunities. This is not only the case for sports but in everyÌýwalk of life.â€Ìý

International Women’s DayÌýis an important date-marker,Ìýbut its influenceÌýshould not be limited to just the week leading up to March 8th.ÌýÌý

AsÌýglobalÌýprogressÌýremainsÌýslow,Ìýit’sÌýimportant that businesses take onÌýthe responsibilityÌýofÌýacceleratingÌýit withinÌýtheir ownÌýoperations and network.ÌýWhether this isÌýinÌýsmall acts ofÌýkindnessÌýand compassion,Ìýreviewing out-of-dateÌýpoliciesÌýor mentoring diverse talent into influential roles, these allÌýhave a ripple effect throughoutÌýyour workÌýand beyond.Ìý
